Who Can Apply For A Temporary Graduate Visa?
​
You can apply for a Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) (Graduate Work stream) Visa if you recently graduated as an international student from a recognized Australian university and wish to extend your stay in Australia to live, study, or gain work experience.
Main Benefits of This Visa
​
After you are granted this visa, you:
-
You can live in Australia to work and/or study for up to 18 months, but you cannot extend this visa to stay longer.
-
(Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders may stay up to five years).
-

Can include your immediate family members in your application.
-
Can apply for your immediate family members as subsequent entrants via ImmiAccount.
-
Travel to and from Australia as frequently as you want as long as your visa is in effect.
What Do You Need To Qualify For This Visa?
​
You must:
-
be under 50 years of age.
-
hold an ‘eligible visa.’
-
either:
-
be the primary holder of a valid/current Student visa (not supported by the Defence or Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister); OR,
-
have held a Student visa within 6 months before lodging your Temporary Graduate Visa application, and now you hold a Bridging Visa A or Bridging Visa B that is granted based on a valid application for a visa; OR
-
now hold a substantive visa, but you held a Student visa within the past 6 months before lodging your Temporary Graduate Visa application.

meet the Australian Study Requirements (ASR) by successfully completing a CRICOS registered degree, diploma, or trade qualification in the English language. Further:
-
You were awarded your qualification as a result of at least two academic years (92 weeks) of study in Australia;
-
Your qualification was not completed in less than 16 calendar months
-
You held a valid visa that permitted you to study the course.
-
You can combine more than one course to meet the Australian Study Requirements as long as each course is closely related to your nominated occupation.

have a qualification that is relevant to an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List
-
be able to provide evidence at the time of lodging your visa application that you have applied for the Australian Federal Police Check.

submit proof of adequate health insurance (such as Overseas Visitor's Health Cover for subclass 485 visa holders) for the Primary and all secondary applicants.

provide evidence that you meet the required level of English at the time of making your application. For example:
-
For IELTS - an overall score of at least 6 with a minimum score of 5 for each of the 4 modules is required​
-
For PTE - an overall score of at least 50 with a minimum score of 36 for each of the 4 modules is required
-

You must not have been granted a Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) or a Skilled-Recognised Graduate (subclass 476) visa in the past as a Primary visa holder.
-
All the applicants must be able to meet the health and character criteria for this visa.
-
You and any secondary applicants do not owe any money to the Australian government or alternatively have made arrangements to pay it back.
-
Your and any secondary applicants’ immigration history is such that it does not prevent the Department of Home Affairs from granting you this visa.

You must be in Australia at the time of lodging your application as well as at the time of granting your visa (unless a Concession period applies to your circumstances).

Subsequent Entrants may apply onshore or offshore for this visa.

Practical Tips

If you have held this visa as a secondary applicant in the past, you can lodge this visa as a Primary Applicant;

You can lodge this visa by enclosing evidence that you have lodged an application with the relevant assessing authority for your Skills Assessment (for example, a receipt of payment, or an acknowledgment from the Assessing authority, or an Application Reference Number, etc.). Actual positive skills assessment is a time of decision criterion.
